In My Hands

"Courage is one step ahead of fear."
-Coleman Young

The day the war started Irene was walking out of the hospital when the first bombs dropped, she was so overcome with fear that time just seemed to freeze. She just stood in astonishment in the middle of the street until a woman, a brave woman, pulled her aside and told her that they needed help at the hospital. Irene was still in shock but she followed instructions and continued to do her work as a nurse. Soon soldiers needed assistance with the wounded on the front lines and Irene was one of the first to go. Although she did not volunteer for this job she willingly accepted the fact that she may die in the line of duty. After her first experiences with war she forgot about fear and soon began to function on the pure fact that she wanted to help people. She soon realized that she was one step ahead of everything, even fear.
